This is a Skinner line descended from Robert Skinner, who came to Maryland as an early settler with Leonard Calvert - ca 1700 - whose descendants' antique silver was all engraved with the same Scottish Skinner crest that my family (descended from Thomas of Malden) said was theirs and which was approved for the descendants of John Skinner of Hoodbridge, NJ (was he John of Essex?) in Matthews American Armory - page 222 (see below). If this John of Hoodbridge and Thomas of Maiden were indeed brothers, then ALL descendants of both should be able to prove their right to the crest and confirm their Scottish origin.

Ancestor:

1. Robert Skinner - early Maryland settler - ca 1700; came with Leonard Calvert.

2. Captain Stuart Skinner - b c1720 Shipyard owner of West River, MD, whose vessels and stocks were burned during the American Revolution.

3. Frederick Skinner - b c1755 MD.

4. John Stuart Skinner - b 22 Feb 1788 - lived Baltimore, MD. Formed Maryland Agricultural Society; was the father of American Turf Journalism; friend of Jefferson, Lafayette, and Daniel Webster. John Stuart Skinner was with Francis Scott Key when he wrote the "Star Spangled Banner." (Skinner and Key were said to be cousins, but we have not found evidence of a family connection.)
