from Matthews' American Armory and Blue Book contributed by Fran McKay The Skinner line of John Skinner of Woodbridge (incorrectly printed as "Hoodbridge"), NJ to the 6th generation - Henry Whipple Skinner - who according to Matthews American Armory (page 222) was given the right to use the Scottish Skinner Coat of Arms that my Skinner line claimed to be theirs, and that the descendants of Robert Skinner (see above), an early Maryland settler with Leonard Calvert, had engraved on all their antique silver as well. If we and they are descended from the father of BOTH Thomas of Malden and John of Essex (provided he is also this John of Woodbridge, NJ), then all descendants of Thomas and John will be able to prove OUR right to this coat of arms as well as to the fact that our ancestors were the Scotch Clansmen my family insisted they were. This line from John Skinner of Woodbridge, NJ (John of Essex?) is as follows: 1. John Skinner of Woodbridge, NJ c1600's. (Is he John of Essex and Brother of Thomas of Malden?) (Highly improbable, see editor's note, below.) 2. (prob) Richard Skinner - b c1705 d 1772 NJ.
7. Richard Dana Skinner b 21 April 1893, Detroit, MI. Editor's note: The above information supplied by Fran McKay was obtained from Matthews' American Armory. Mrs. McKay believes the second line, that of John Skinner of Woodbridge, (Woodbridge may be incorrectly listed by Matthews as Woodbridge) may be of the line of John of Essex, and that 1 John is possibly the brother of Thomas of Malden. Based on the birth date given by Matthews of 2 Richard - 1705, It is highly inconceivable that 1 John was born c1600. I believe that 1 John's birthdate would be closer to 1680. If this is the case, then there exists the possibility that this I John may be the son of Richard Skinner and Susannah Poulain. Can anyone prove or disprove this theory? (E85.1231.02) |
