!Gambill, J. P. (1985.) Pitts family history, 1643-1985, Vol 1; The descendants of John Pitts, 1753-1834. page 226: Mary Henry ³Polly² PITTS was born near Pittsboro, North Carolina in 1786 and came to Logan County with her father about 1800. She married Theophilus SKINNER in Logan County, Kentucky, January 13, 1801. In the 1850 census of Franklin County, Alabama, Mary Skinner was living with [Elizabeth Hurley family] and gave the year of her birth as 1788 instead of 1786 as was listed in the... He was born in Nash County, North Carolina in 1780, and died in Franklin County, Alabama, May 12, 1845. He is buried near the Sargent of Gholson Cemetery west of Waco, Alabama. He was the son of Samuel Skinner, who died after February 2, 1798, and a grandson of William Skinner. Samuel served in the Revolutionary War and proof of his service has been accepted by the Daughters of the American Revolution and his name is listed in the Patriots Index published in 1966. Theophilus received a land grant in Christian County, Kentucky in 1799. He was listed in the 1810 census of Christian County. An entry in Volume 22, page 247 of the Kentucky Historical Register published in 1924 under the date of June 7, 1911, lists Theophilus Skinner, Lt. Col., Regt. 72, Brigade 11, Christian County, Kentucky. They lived in that part of Christian County that became Trigg County in 1820. Theophilus and his family moved to Franklin County, Alabama in 1818. The census records show that they were living in this county in 1820, 1830 and 1840. June 24, 1839, Book W, page 321, Logan County, Kentucky, Theophilus and Polley sold their portion of the estate of John Pitts. Theophilus was a ³famous² Baptist minister and was instrumental in founding several churches. He was also a member of the Alabama Legislature for a number of years. Mr. James in Distinguished Men, Women and Families of Franklin County, Alabama page 34 says ³It is to be deeply regretted [Page 227/E 95.0116.11] that so little has been preserved relating to the life and works of this man who was without a doubt far above the ordinary in learning and executive ability for those days.² Combining the census records for 1810 through 1840 which gives only the sex of the person and the age group, we have the following list of persons. The unknown may not have belonged to Theophilus and Mary but may have been relatives living with them when the census was taken. The Franklin County records were burned in 1889 so it is very difficult to do research there. Proof for the children listed here was provided by Mrs. Rumel and Mrs. Eckhardt from statement and family records by children and grandchildren of those listed.Bible belonging to her brother. Maryıs husband, Theophilus, died in 1845 and she was living with a daughter.
