Contemporary Records: The farm where we were born was hilly, stony and stumpy and so poor that the only crop that was ever raised on it that amounted to anything was kids. Three of the boys made "Who's Who" and three travelled more than 1,500,000 miles. (Wm E Skinner to Mrs Fernald in 1940) Skinner, T P - farmer and stock raiser, P O Buckeye Cottage, Clayton twp, Perry co, Ohio, b in this county in 1834, son of Lemuel & Lucinda (Birch) Skinner. He was m 1860 to Harriet Brown, dau Issac & Ellinor (Chinoth) Brown. They were parents of 9 children, as above. (History of Fairfield & Perry Counties, OH - A A Graham) Note: (Doris Seymour Wahl) - The following - portions of a letter, were found in the "effects of Mrs. Natalie Fernald, when I purchased them a few years ago. Unfortunately, I have no idea where the missing pages may be. All I have is written here. Copy of a letter from Thomas Peter Skinner to his son Charles E Skinner of Westinghouse Electric Mfg Co Pittsburgh, PA - Letter written from Redfield, Perry co, OH in 1888, My Dear Son: Father's father was Peter Skinner. His brothers, as far as I know, were John (who removed to the vicinity of Paris, Kentucky about 1817/18) - his sons were Thomas, Alfred and Willis. Thomas removed to Sangamon co, IL, at the early settlement of the county, where his descendants probably live yet. The others remained in Kentucky. Do not know the names of any of his daughters. Cornelius was another of Peter's brothers, the names of his children, I do not know. Amos and Nathan, twins - Amos came to Perry County in 1838, remained here a few months, then removed to St Louis, MO where he and his wife both died. His children were Margaret, Amos, Nathan and Addie. Nathan Died soon after their removal to MO. Margaret married James Ramsay of their neighborhood and they now live near Bridgton, St Louis co, MO. Amos m a Miss Thompson years ago and his family were living in St Louis the last I heard from them. Addie married a merchant of St Louis, MO - O Gibson. She died, probably 20 years since, leaving two daughters there, I suppose they are still living there. Mr Gibson married again and is living there yet as far as I know. Amos' twin brother, Nathan, died in Aldie, VA about 1857 or 1858. One sister m a man by the name of John Landee and removed to Southwestern or to Kentucky in the twenties. Another sister married a man by the name of Gouden and also removed to Ohio at an early period. Peter married Sarah Roberts in 1799. Peter's children were Mary, Amos, Nathan, Lemuel, James, Matilda, Alexander, Sarah, Charles, John Richard, and Adenline Vandenter, (or Vanderveer), and Peter, who died when only a few years of age. All the rest raised families. Peter Skinner died in 1859, his wife 20 to 30 years before. Mary married John Crier, they came to Ohio in 1837 or 1838. Crider died over thirty years ago. Mary about ten years since. One of their daughters resided in Dakota. The rest of those living reside in Morgan, Perry and Athens counties, OH. Amos married Margaret Murray. Came to Ohio in 1838 and is now living near Pertersville, Perry co, OH, aged 85 years. One of his sons is in southern Kansas, adjoining Indian Territory. Another son at Spring Hill, Kansas. The daughters all reside near him. Nathan married Mary Rose, died a few years since in Virginia. His wife died, probably 25 years ago. One of his sons lives in Frederic co, MD. The rest live near the old house in Loudon co, VA. Lemuel married Lucinda Burch in 1829. Came to Ohio in 1835, died in 1875. His wife is living near Redfield, Perry co, OH, aged 81 yrs. One son died in Denver, CO, 8 years since. His family reside there now. One son is in Ocheltree... And here, unfortunately, is where there seems to be several pages missing. The letter continues ...Sons of Corneluis Skinner of New Jersey, who was descended from one of the old French Hugenot families who were among the very earliest settlers in this country. The Skinners who were among the early settlers of Perry co all trace back to the same New Jersey family. Their forefathers, having gone to Pennsylvania about the same time ours went to Loudon co, VA. Auntie King was a daughter of one of the same family. Aaron Skinner who died at Bristol, Perry co, was a descendant of another. Jonas Skinner, now living near New Lexington is a grandson of another. Jessie Skinner, who used to be one of the pioneer merchants of New Lexington, was a grandson of another. Eph Colburn's mother was a daughter of Robert Skinner, etc. etc. ad infinitum. Some of our relatives live in Warren co, this state, but I do not know the names of but one of the older ones and that was Richard, who had the name of being as honest a man as ever lived. But that is characteristic of the Skinner family. And it has been said that not one of the name has ever been known to be abuseful to his wife. What I have written has been entirely from memory, not having the scratch of a pen to refer to in any particular, but I think I will get all the information I can and put it in shape that my children can keep a record of their ancestry. I will enclose your pedigree as far as I am able to trace it so you will see how it looks on paper. We are all well and hope you are in good health and spirits. Come home when you can get an opportunity as we all want to see you very badly. Give my respects to my relatives in Woodruff and also my friend, M B Cooper. Your Father (signed) Thomas Peter Skinner (54 yrs at the time of writing)
