The Skinner Family Association

With the publication of the first issue of the Skinner Kinsmen Update a suggestion has passed my desk to organize a Skinner Family Association. This comes as no surprise as John B. Skinner of Orono, ME has had the bug in my ear to get one organized for some time. After much deliberation, we are throwing it out to you, our readers. Do you see the need for an association? The purpose of the Association would be multi-faceted. First, it would be a 'clearing house' for ALL Skinner data. This would be the primary function. As a Skinner researcher, you are undoubtedly aware of the numerous bits and pieces of information scattered in myriad places. Many of us have found information on 'local Skinners' that do not appear to be in our own particular line, but not really knowing to whose line they belong. Centralizing this information would be a great benefit to Skinner researchers everywhere. Second. Accurate, exact data. Over the past months I have been collating countless pages of Skinner information only to find many, many inconsistencies. These inconsistencies appear to be a result of attempts to get together 'quickie' family lines for local histories. Some of the early records are as confusing as these genealogies. The membership of the Association would assist in straightening up these inconsistencies. Many people have made considerable inroads regarding accurate Skinner ancestry. I have on my desk presently a letter from Ms. Nurre of Hardin, MT with corrections to Fernald's Skinner Kinsmen. Many people are doing much work, and apparently more accurately than in the past. By consolidating this information and substantiating it with evidence, we could all get on in other areas of research. Third. The Skinner Families would be developing a sense of unity, togetherness, and belonging. Every family needs that. There are many small Skinner family get-togethers that could be shared through the Update. Also, the probability of a massive Skinner Get-together. Along with those, the basics of a family organization. Inclusion of vital records relating to the Skinner family -- births, deaths, marriages. Personal glimpses of Skinner descendants. Biographies of Skinner ancestors and descendants. Local histories relating to the Skinner families. How and why other families are connected to the Skinners. Where Skinners moved and why they moved there. Family groups and other bits and pieces relating to the Skinner family. Last, but not least, the publication of a comprehensive Skinner Family History. I am learning of more and more small, personal publications that should be shared with everyone. There are many lines of descent that are currently being worked on but are missing from the published sources. A book about Skinners by Skinners. As promised, I am putting it out to the general readership. If you have any comments or suggestions, by all means write and express them. We are always encouraged by reader response.
