12109-A Old Frederick Rd, Thurmont, MD 21788: Captain John Rush who
was a soldier in Cromwell's Army later became a Quaker. In 1683
Captain Rush, his wife, Susanna Lucas, several young children and
grand-children emigrated to America with William Penn and settled at
Byberry near Philadelphia. Later most of the family following the lead
of one of the sons-in-law, Rev. John Hart, became Keithian and still later
Baptists. Some of the descendants moved across the river into New
Jersey. About 1773 some fifteen or twenty families more or less
related by marriage moved from New Jersey to Lower Turkeyfoot
Township, Somerset County, Pennsylvania and founded what came to be
known as the Jersey Settlement. In 1775 they formed the Jersey Baptist
Church near the present village of Ursina. Among these were the
families of William Rush, a descendant of Captain John Rush, Nathaniel
Skinner, Senior, Robert Colborn, William Tissue, David King, Oliver Drake,
Andrew Ream, Joseph Lanning, William Lanning, William Brooks, Obediah
Reed and others. Jacob Rush, a son of William Rush, was a soldier in the
Revolutionary War and left many descendants, a considerable number of
whom still live in western Pennsylvania and many others have been
traced to others states as for west as California.
Others of the New Jersey Rush tribe, Michael, William, Peter and Jacob
Rush, all nephews of William Rush of Lower Turkeyfoot moved to
Washington and Greene Counties, Pennsylvania. Descendants still live in
that region. Sylvester R. Rush, a lawyer of Omaha, Nebraska, a
descendant of Michael Rush, in 1916 published a genealogical account of
his branch of the Rush family.
The Youghiogheny River separates Lower Turkeyfoot Township,
Somerset Co from Henry Clay Twp, Fayette Co, and the crest of Laurel
Hill is the boundary between Lower Turkeyfoot and Saltlick Twp (now
Springfield Twp), Fayette Co. In the last years of the eighteenth century
families of the same name Rush appeared in both Henry Clay and Saltlick
Townships. Their relationship to the William Rush Family of Lower
Turkeyfoot has not been established, but some of them are listed as
members of the Jersey Baptist Church.
DAVID RUSH, the great-grandfather of the writer, along with his
brother, Nathaniel Rush is recorded in the census of 1800 as living in
Saltlick twp, Fayette co. In addition there are listed two Peter Rush's
and a Henry Rush, all of whom were old enough to be the father of David
and Nathaniel. In the census of 1810 the name of a younger brother,
William Rush, appears along with David, and the name of Nathaniel
disappears. It is known from other sources that Nathaniel had moved to
Perry co, OH. In 1820 William Rush had moved to Perry co, OH and David
is listed in Lower Turkeyfoot twp, Somerset co, PA. It is probable that
the family moved to Lower Turkeyfoot to care for the father-in-law,
Robert Skinner, who died in 1823. In the census of 1820 Robert Skinner
is listed as living alone. In the census of 1800 and 1810 David and his
brothers are lised adjacent to Reuben's children. According to the county
records, Reuben Skinner, Senior, was in Saltlick twp as early as 1796. He
built a mill and the region was referred to as Skinner's Mill and also as
Indian Creek. It is now Mill Run in Springfield twp. The minutes of the
Jersey Baptist Church show that the organization at times met with its
members at Skinner's Mill, at a distance of some ten or twelve miles
over Laurel Hill from the church building. Reuben Skinner, Sr. was an
uncle of Mary Skinner Rush, the wife of David Rush. It is likely that the
Rushes lived near the Skinner families. The land records do not show any
land in this region warranted to anyone of the name Rush, but the county
history indicates that a family of the name of Rush lived on land which
was warranted to a Meason.
The minutes of the Jersey Baptist Church show that on June 25, 1825:
"Brother and sister David Rush and his wife Mary applied for a letter of
Dismissian we grant their Request and order the Clerks to Prepair the
same." They moved to Marshall co, VA, (now WV) about this time.
The forebearers of David Rush and his brothers are not definitely
known, but the ancestry of Lydia Truax or Truex, the wife of William
Rush, may find a clue to their origin. The parents of Lydia Truex were
Samuel Truex and Elizabeth Palmer. He was the son of Benjamin Truex,
the son of WIlliam Truex. The minutes of the Jersey Baptist Church
records on July 4th 1806, "Church met Samuel & Elizabeth Truax his wife
presented their Letter of Recommendation from Conoloway Church & was
received." Samuel Truax is listed in the census of 1810 in Saltlick twp,
Fayette co, PA, with the Rush and Skinner families. About the time of
the Revolutionary War numerous Truax and Rush families are listed in
Belfast and Bethel twp, Bedford co, (now Fulton co), PA. The Palmer
family is also known in this region. One tract of land known as "Rushes
Farm" was located on Conoloway Creek.
.b: The Pennsylvania Archives list in Bethel twp (now in Fulton co) in
1774, Jacob, Jacob, Jr., Henry and Peter Rush families and George Rush a
renter. In 1775 are added single men, Henry and John Rush, Jacob Rush,
single appears in 1776. After 1776 the name of George Rush disappears.
The census of 1800 first brings in the name of Daniel Rush, who was a
brother of the Rush brothers who emigrated to Washington and Greene
Counties. These men had a younger brother, George, who was a soldier in
the Revolutionary War. Many Rush names carry through as far as the
census of 1810, then they all disappear except Daniel Rush who lived
there until about 1840. Included in the records are various Truax
families, among them the names, Samuel and Richard, which names later
appear in the Lower Turkeyfoot region.
John and ELizabeth Rush disposed of land in Fulton co in 1792 and 1798,
and Henry Rush and his wife, Sarah, in 1795.
The Jersey Baptist Church minutes records September 3, 1796 "Church
Met Received Peter Rush and Elizabeth Rush into the Church by Letter it
Being a day of Business."
June 7, 1798. "Church Met Received Elizabeth Rush into the Church
Received Richard Truax and Mary his wife by Letter. Received Hannah
Skinner and William SKinner Experiences. Resolved a part of our church
living at Indian Creek have Liberty to be Constitued."
.c: Nathaniel, David and William Rush were brothers. Nathaniel Rush
was the great-grandfather of Mrs. Nellie G. Woolsey of Los Angeles, CA.
David Rush was the great-grandfather of the writer of this article.
Reuben Skinner, Sr. was the son of Nathaniel Skinner, Sr. of Lower
Turkeyfoot. Richard, Samuel, Reuben, Jr., Nathaniel and James Skinner
were the sons of Reuben Skinner, Sr.
John Rush was the son of Jacob Rush, Sr., the Revolutionary War soldier
of Lower Turkeyfoot.
In the History of Perry co, OH, as early as 1815 there was a Henry Rush.
Nathaniel and William Rush are recorded as early settlers in the same
township. Further trace of Henry Rush has not been found.
A pooling of the information in the possession of the descendants show
that Nathaniel, David, Phebe, William and Isaiah Rush were brothers and
sister and that probably Mary Rush Skinner, the wife of Samuel Skinner
was another sister. There were traditions carried down that there were
other sisters who remained in PA.
