Evans and Mary P. Wood. Sons D.C. and Thomas traveled to CA in search of gold in about 1850. They went down the "River" to New Orleans where they caught a freighter for the isthmus of Panama. They crossed the isthmus on foot and took another ship to CA. This trip, though great fun, did not make them rich. They were home again by 1856 when Tom and Mary Bing were married. By the birth of their first son Bing John Skinner 3 Jun 1857 Mary was with the J. O. Skinners in Des Moines and Tom and DC has taken off again for the "West." This time it was CO. They were there when the war between the states began and both enlisted in the Colorado First Infantry. It wasn't long until their unit was renamed the Colorado First Cavalry. They served with this unit until the end of the war and during a period when they were stateioned in Salina KS made the first of their trips into Lincoln County and the Saline Valley. In 1865, six of these men known as the "Colorado Boys" claimed the land in Lincoln co. that was to be their homesteads. D.C. Skinner, Isaac DeGraff, R. B. Clark, J. Adams, E. Johnson and W. Thompson. (Doc: History of Lincoln co, KS by Elizabeth N Barr and Beverly, Our Home Town by Rachel Ruggels.) Tom had gone to Des Moines to get his family and didn't arrive in Lincoln County until 1867. There is a monument in Lincoln KS to these early settlers that I say in May of 1991. Further documentation on these families includes the early school records of Lincoln County held by the County Assessor of Lincoln County. They show Tom and D.C.ıs children in school together. Interestingly one of the teachers was Mary Bingıs nephew, John Bing Ferguson of WV. The Census for Kansas in 1870, 1880 and 1900 verifies who was there and what the family make up was. The naming patterns in the family are very clear and do help to establish the family connection. Thomas Everton Skinner and his second wife Sarah Nixon Lawrence are buried in Monroe Cemetery, Colorado Township, Lincoln Count KS. There is a memorial to Mary Marie Bing Skinner on the T E Skinner lot (pictures in my file). Darius Calvin was a probate judge in Lincoln co and I have a copy of a record of that along with a copy of John Dartıs will. He enlisted and served in the Colorado First Calvary as Dick. I guess it is easy to see why. D.C.'s farm and Tom Skinnerıs adjoined. I have copies of their homestead deeds that help too. Amanda and their three children are buried at Mountain View Cemetery, Longmont, Boulder County, CO. I believe D.C. is buried at Lincoln KS and have written for verification but nothing yet. (Pictures and records in my file) I am privileged to know Gladys Skinner Bunting of Magnolia, IL. She is the daughter of Calvin Darius and had many of her fatherıs pictures and letters that help to verify this information. He even had a picture of Jane Everton but unfortunately none of Asahel. She is past ninety but clear of mind and a big help with this history. In addition I want to thank Larry Johnson of Des Moines who found some of the written material that were needed to verify John Osbornıs life there.

!.....E94.0417.05, 12 SKU 11(3):52-55 Kane, Virgina L: d & bur Beverly, Colorado twp, Lincoln, KS: Thomas went to California during the gold rush by going down the Mississippi River by boat, crossing the Isthmus of Panama on foot and taking another boat to California. He didnıt strike it rich and came home after a few years of trying. He married and soon got the traveling itch again-this time he went to Colorado and was there when the Civil War began. He joined the Colorado Boys and was in service until 1866. See letters in Record file. The 1870 Federal Census Shows T. E. 37 M. M. his wife 35, J.B. 13, E.S. 10, A.E. 8, C.D. 3/12 and M.M. 3/12 all male except the two M.M. This was in Colorado Township Lincoln co., KS. In 1880 Thomas is shown as 47 with Alfred 17 and Calvin 10. Uncle Bing and Uncle Vert were on there first trip west at that time. A memorial to Mary Marie Bing Skinner is on one side of the stone in Monroe Cem. and Thomas on the other side he was 62 yrs 11 mo 1 day. She was 39 yrs 5 mo 4 days. It says also Not dead but gone before. He owned lots 1 & 2 in Monroe Cem. The Thomas Skinner Homestead is still in the family - it belongs to Nora Skinner Mortonıs sons and grandsons and is farmed by her great grandson Jonathan Morton of Lincoln, KS. I have seen what is left of their dugout near the ³bend² of the Saline River just south of Beverly, KS.
