Descendants of Thomas Skinner of Malden, MA. Pioneer Press. p 179,
185, 187 Contemporary Records:
1850 Census, Center Township, Porter County, IN, Aug 7
1860 Census, Valparaiso Center twp. Porter co, IN. June 4, PO Valpariaso
1870 Census, July 14, 2nd ward, Valparaiso, Union twp. Porter co, IN
1880 Census, June 26, Porter co, IN, City of Valparaiso (Mayor of
Valparaiso)
p 188: Part of a Warrany Deed: This indenture witnesseth that Porter
County by Samuel P Robins. Artellus V Bartholmew and A. B. Price,
Commissioners of Porter co, IN, convey and warrant to John N. Skinner of
Porter co, IN for the sum of $3000.00, the following Real Estate in said
Porter co. Lot No 3 in Block No 28 old Survey to the town, now City of
Valparaiso, excepting so much of the West side of said lot upon which
the brick building known as the Excelsian block now stands together with
the rights appliances and appurtanances conveyed to said county by Wm.
H Calkins and no more nor no less (the rest gone) Received for Records,
28th August, 189. (vol 45, p 213)
From the Valparaiso (Ind.) Herald: The services over, the casket was
placed in the street where all might be afforded an opportunity to taking
a farewell look of him whom all respected.
Another newspaper stated that it remained there for an hour while over
3,000 persons filed past.
The funeral procession formed as follows: "Minister, hearse,
pallbearers, family, relatives, council, officers, schoolboard, members
of the Press, citizens in carriages, citizens on foot, faculty and students
of the Normal Schook, firemen".
"Thus was honest John Skinner laid to rest in the bosom of his mother
earth. That the tribute of respect paid to his memory was a worthy one,
no one will deny, but that he was entirely worthy of the tribute, no one
will dare gain say. Perhaps no other man was so universally known and
esteemed in Valparaiso and Porter County as he, and in all probability
there is scarely a man, woman or child in Porter County who is not
familiar with his name".
"Valparaiso had but one John Skinner and it may not be going too far to
predict that it will never have another".
Resolution adopted by the City Council: "That the public buildings be
draped at public expense for thirty days".
"He stood at the head of the mercantile business of Porter County.
Among the enterprises with which he had been connected are the building
of the P. Ft. W. & C. R.R., the founding of the Valparaiso College, the
bringing hither of the old Peninsula Road, now the Grand Trunk."
"In 1858 he was nominated by acclamation for State Senator but
declined to accept the nomination. In 1872 he was elected by the
democrats, Mayor of Valparaiso which office he held to the time of his
death".(April 1882)
