!.....E89.0726.09 Skinner, Margaret R "Hale House" excerpt: "John Steele, who d. at Farmington, 27 Feb 1664/5, son of Richard Steele of Fairstead. Came to New England in 1632 and settled in Cambridge, Mass. John Steele removed to Hartford in 1635, and in 1636 was one of the eight men commissioned by the General Court of Massachusetts to govern Connecticut. He was the first Town Clerk of Hartford from 1639, and before removal to Farmington was Town Clerk there from 1645 until his death. He had settled in Farmington by 1652. He served as Deputy in the General Court at sixty-six regular and special sessions and at twenty-seven adjourned sessions, between 1638 and 1659. He m. (2) 25 Nov 1655, Mercy (Rusco) Seymour.
