! E94.0719.27 Walker, Mrs. A.L corr (3/87) Rt 1, Box 186, Lovington NM 88260: My husband descends from William Skinner lived in Screven co, GA for a number of years after the Rev War (c1790-1806). In 1806 he moved to Richmond co, GA, near Augusta where he died in 1820. Records show he served with North Carolina forces in the Revolutionay War and received land grants in GA. His wife Elizabeth died in 1811 is buried in the family plot, Augusta. E94.0719.28a Fulks, Sara *P* TSKJ96A query: William Skinner came to Georgia soon after the close of the Rev. War and first settled in Screven County. He was originally from North Carolina, where he was a Major in the State Militia of that state. It is beleved that he served throughout the Rev. War. He later moved to Richmond co, GA and land records show that he bought 4,159 acres in Richmond Co. from Seaborn Jones on 12 Dec 1806. The book tells of a family legend that on the day of his death (11 June 1820) he invited all of his children to come to his home for a family dinner and then, while his family was at the dinner table ourside in the open air in the yard, the old major went to a point under the stairway in one of the bedrooms and there committed suicide by placing his old army musket under his chin and pulliing the trigger with his toe. He was rumored to have buried a large sum of gold on his property, and for many years people would sneak on the land to dig for this gold. As far as I could learn, it was never found. I believe this Maj. William Skinner was a brother to my husband's ancestor, Capt. Isaac Skinner of Richmond Co., GA. However, I have not been able to prove this.
